Patriot Roof Guide
Shingle Roof Installation, Step by Step
Our roofing work on this site centers on one service: replacing the roof on a Charlotte home with GAF asphalt shingles, installed to the Patriot Standard. Each part below is a step in that one service rather than a separate product.
Deck review
Once the old roofing is off, the wood decking underneath is exposed for the first time in years. We look for soft, delaminated or water-stained sheets. If a section needs replacing, we show you what we found and explain the choice before that wood is covered.
Underlayment and leak barrier
Underlayment is the sheet layer between the deck and the shingles. It is the backup that keeps wind-driven rain from reaching the wood if water ever gets past the shingles. Along the eaves, in valleys and around openings, a self-adhering leak barrier adds protection where water collects or changes direction.
Edge metal and flashing
Drip edge at the eaves and rakes guides water into the gutters and away from the fascia. Where the roof meets a wall, a chimney or a skylight, flashing is set so each piece sheds water over the one below it. Sealant alone is never treated as a substitute for proper metal.
GAF shingle installation
Shingles are fastened and aligned according to the manufacturer's written instructions for the product chosen. Starter shingles go along the edges first, so the first course is sealed and secured.
Ridge and attic airflow
A roof works best when the attic can breathe. Air comes in low, near the eaves, and leaves high, at the ridge. We check that the intake and the exhaust are balanced and that the ridge cap is installed to match the shingle.
Cleanup and final walk
Ask how cleanup and the final walkthrough are handled on your job; the answer belongs in writing before work starts.
What is outside this page
This site does not cover flat or low-slope roof systems or insurance claims. If your question is about one of those, ask, and we will tell you plainly whether it is something Patriot does.
