Patriot Roof Guide

What Happens on Roof Installation Day

Most homeowners have never watched a roof go on, and the noise and activity can be surprising. Knowing the usual order of the day makes it easier to plan around and to know what is normal.

Before the crew arrives

We talk with you ahead of time about where the crew will park, where the container for old materials will sit and which plants, outdoor furniture or decorations should be moved. It helps to take pictures off interior walls on the top floor, since hammering can shake them loose, and to keep pets and children inside or away from the work area.

Setup and protection

The crew lays tarps over beds and shrubs next to the house and sets ladders and roof brackets. Gutters and windows below the work area are protected where possible.

Tear-off

The old shingles and underlayment come off one section at a time, down to the deck. This is the loudest part of the day. Debris goes straight into the container rather than onto your lawn.

The deck check

With the deck exposed, the crew looks for wood that is soft, rotted or stained. If any sheathing needs replacement, we let you know what we found before covering it, so the decision is yours.

New layers go on

Drip edge, underlayment, leak barrier and starter strip go down first, followed by the shingle courses. Flashing is set at walls, chimneys and vents as the shingles reach them, and the ridge is finished last.

Weather

Roofing depends on the weather. If rain moves in, the crew covers any exposed section before leaving. A change in plan because of weather is normal, and we will tell you when work will resume.

Cleanup and the final walk

When the roof is finished, the site is cleared and the tarps come up. Ask how cleanup and the final walkthrough are handled on your job, so you know what to expect before the last day. Each of these steps is part of the Patriot Standard.
